Select Media creates artefacts and documentations of evolving media arts and countercultural currents. Our special interests are contemporary media and cultures on the margins.

Select is a project of Lumpen Media Group and we produce media arts festivals and events mostly in Chicago.

Select releases publications, DVDS and CDs in conjunction with events and festivals that we produce. We see the accompanying products as distribution channels for creators' works. We create magazines and DVDS that are released at events and given away to participants. Then we sell and/or distribute the rest of our print runs to stores and groups worldwide. Some of the videos are avaialble for viewing in the Lumpen online video section. Most of the prodcuts we release are for sale online at Quimbys.

Video Samizdat

(from Russian sam, “self,” and izdatelstvo, “publishing”), literature secretly written, copied, and circulated in the former Soviet Union and usually critical of practices of the Soviet government.

Video Samizdat
definition: A system in the U.S and the capitalist countries in its orbit by which works that violate "Intellectual Property" rights and/or are critical of the practices of the US empire are clandestinely replicated and distributed.

Select Video Samizdat is the name of our DVD distribution project. It's a program where we distribute our compilation DVDs containing tactical media documentaries, innovative experimental work, social change videos, reports from the streets, and culture jamming initiatives to activists, festivals, artists and creative resisters across the country. We believe the format of the DVD is a very useful and powerful way to pass on supressed and critical uncommercial work to wider audiences one dvd player at a time.

The DVDS contain a selection of works by radical cultural workers and experimental video makers critiquing various coercive forces and systems. Using desktop editing techniques mixed with humorous direction many of these makers appropriate work, divert and re-edit it as a way to register their dissent or to create something surreal. Described as tactical mediaticians, culture jammers, troublemakers, media activists and humorists, these makers create works that are a sampling of the digital video underground that is impacting our cultures during a time of global crisis.

Themes covered in these compilations include anti-war messages, community organizing, innovative animation, education on globalisation issues, para-politics and documentation of creative artist and activist practices.

We travel with programs on demand abroad and encourage dissemination of our media products as widely as possible.

New Select DVD Available for Purchase or for Public Screenings
Select has just put together a new DVD, Select #8 Cultural Counterintelligence, a compilation of some of the best new political short documentaries, animation, experimental films, PSAs, and remixed videos from the last two select media festivals. The DVD has been released at SMF3 and will be available online at Quimbys soon. If you are interested in putting on your own Select Media Festival show in your community by publicly exhibiting the Cultural Counterintelligence DVD (or any past compilations), you can purchase a DVD with a screening license and show our program in your local theater, art space, microcinema, café, classroom or bar. Purchase a license for $50 to support the video samizdat project.

Select #7 magazine, is an experimental media project highlighting interventionist art as cultural interference. Issue # 7 is a super tabloid magazine poster anthology called Street Prop, guest designed and co-curated by Cody Hudson of Struggle Inc. It is stuffed with stickers and stencils and much love. For this iteration of the project we asked designers, artists and activists to make a poster, stencil or sticker containing messages about a future they think we need to reach or comment about the current social realities. They envisioned a utopia, an apocalypse, a place free of haters and mass destruction propagators, a dream world, a liberated zone, a world without Bush, a room of soft pink bunnies. Agit prop meets office cube motivation. Street camouflage vs. neon attack. Revolution vs. evolution. The magazine is a portable street propaganda kit used to beautify public and private areas.
