About Lumpen

Lumpen magazine is an independent, critical arts and culture publication, published six times a year with a circulation of 20,000 copies per issue throughout the US and internationally through its subscription base.

We believe what A.J. Liebling said, that the “freedom of the press belongs to those who own one.” And it’s a good thing we do.

Interested in contributing to the independent mediaverse, Lumpen Media Group was founded in Chicago in 1991 to create distribution outlets for critical countercultural entertainment, news, analysis and opinion. Since its inception Lumpen widens the involvement of its readership in debate, discussion and awareness of social, political and cultural issues which are otherwise ignored, hidden, suppressed or censored.

Lumpen magazine can be found in hundreds of outlets across the United States. Via our media projects and myriad events and festivals we are defeating mediocrity in all of its forms—and celebrating the vibrancy of the emerging cultures.

The magazine is our oldest project, a home base or point of entry for everything else we create and promote. In the last 107 issues and 16 years our goal has stayed the same: present innovative cultural, and political information to our readers. In almost 17 years we’ve expanded our activities to producing events, exhibitions, festivals, other publications, art/activist projects as well as other media.

We do:

- Version, an international festival about art technology and social issues.

- Select Media Festival our annual media arts festival

- WPBR, an in-house radio station

- TLVSN, a cable-access television series

- Select, our emerging art project/magazine/DVD, plus corresponding touring festival
ecture.

Co-Prosperity Sphere, a collectively-run gallery and social space that fosters a habitat and cultural home for emerging accidents, radical culture and intentional community organizing

- More events than you can shake a stick at: hundreds of rock, hip-hop, dance, and noise shows from emerging musicians all over the world; hundreds of fundraisers for social and political organizations; and dozens of super kick-ass trouble-making parties that last all night.

Basically, we facilitate connectivity between artists, activists, and cultural workers to interact and conspire to create new projects, enlarge scenes, share commonalties, engage in emerging trends, utilize technologies in the arts, and create new strategies for confronting corporate hegemony over our cultures and lives.

Our operations are experiments in what can be created when a group of artists with a few resources just make it happen.
